Where to go?

Train Links? Seaside? Countryside? Choosing a university is not just about the academic - it's also about the town or city that you choose to call home for the next three years. Why not make a start?

As hopefully the sun is shining and students are enjoying the break from studying, this is a good month for Year 12 students to think carefully about where they would like to study at university. Practical considerations are paramount and must apply alongside the suitability of the course itself. The UCAS website is a good place to go to find out information on what to think about when applying to university : www.ucas.com and is free to all students. Here are some points to consider this month.

1. Campus university or City / Town.

Lists of the UK campus universities are readily available, and some will love the safety and security these can provide, perhaps encouraging students to socialise more as all learning, accommodation and socialising will take place on campus. Others might prefer to be part of the local community more, providing an escape from peers and studies and enjoying the facilities that the local town offers.

2. Distance from home.

How easy is it to travel home, or for parents / carers to visit with much needed supplies and cakes during the term, or do you want to fly the nest and explore?

3. What is your ideal location?

Are you a fan of a large city with trams/train/tube networks, or do you prefer a slightly smaller town? Is being near to the countryside or seaside important to you? Bearing in mind that many graduates today end up living near their university location, it is even more important to choose your location carefully.

This month is a great opportunity to visit possible locations, simply to see if you enjoy the location and whether it is somewhere that you could be happy to live. Take your family and enjoy a short break, take a trip with a friend or the UCAS hub has some interesting videos provided by each university. Enjoy.
